Stephen Smith's introduction to community organizing is a remarkable, well-written, and insightful account of his search for a way to turn democratic promise into practice.
— Marshall Ganz, Lecturer in Public Policy, Harvard Kennedy School

Stephen Smith has done a superb job in demonstrating that democracy is not a spectator sport.
— Jacqueline Y. Collins, Illinois State Senator

If we don't have strong grassroots organizing, the age of Obama will become another neoliberal moment—another missed opportunity for empowering poor and working people!
— Cornel West, Professor of Religion and African American Studies, Princeton University

Reading Stoking the Fire of Democracy is like talking to the part of your self that tells you to risk more, dream bigger, push harder.
—Eboo Patel, Founder and Executive Director, Interfaith Youth Core

Stephen Smith is a voice from and for the next generation of fighters for social justice, giving his young adult colleagues an introduction to grassroots organizing based on his own experiences in places as diverse as Harvard University, Botswana and Chicago. Stoking the Fire of Democracy explains how organizations are built and sustained, how they go into action around issues of common concern, how they exercise power, and how they learn from their successes and failure.

Stoking the Fire of Democracy was featured on Chicago Public Radio's award-winning program Eight Forty-Eight. To hear his interview with Alison Cuddy, click here.

STEPHEN NOBLE SMITH, age 29, was born in Charleston, West Virginia and raised in Plano, Texas. A graduate of Harvard University, Smith received a Masters in Comparative Politics from the London School of Economics. He’s worked alongside Iraq war veterans, AIDS activists in Botswana, and homeless bakers to try and make the world a better place. For four years, he was the lead organizer and founder of PACT, a Chicago-based grassroots young adults organization affiliated with the Industrial Areas Foundation.
