The Believer’s Edge is a brief parable that illustrates the benefits of religious faith and practice uncovered by modern scientific research.
Often we read about apparent conflicts between science and religion. Meanwhile, scientific studies point to many real, tangible benefits of practicing religious faith. In the media we often see religion depicted as nothing more than a source of conflict. Yet a 2001 survey of 30,000 Americans found that the people most likely to be involved in working for the good of their communities are people who are active in religious organizations. These also are the people generally most tolerant of cultural diversity in our communities. The popular view is that religion is a divisive force. Meanwhile, the research tells us that people who are religiously active make good neighbors and build better, more culturally diverse communities.
Research also indicates that people who are active in faith-based communities tend to live happier, healthier, more satisfying lives. Studies show, for example, correlations between being active in a church and having lower blood pressure, longer life expectancy, a better immune system, and a better self image. One study even suggests that active participation in a faith-based community is related to an improved sex life.
But scientific studies are dull. In contrast, The Believer’s Edge is a charming little parable that tells the story of Derek, a family man who is approaching mid-life and senses that he is losing his way. While he’s been busy with things that interest him, his wife Ann and their children have built lives that don’t rely on what he has to contribute.
Derek turns to an old acquaintance, Tom, who puts him in touch with a cast of diverse and colorful characters who tell Derek about the benefits they have received from becoming active in a religious community. In the end it’s Derek’s choice what to do with that information.
Readers, of course, have the same choice. Those who aren’t active in any religious organization will find The Believer’s Edge intriguing. Those who are active will find it affirming — an uplifting reminder of the many benefits they are building up in their everyday lives by continuing to be active in their faith communities.
If timeless truths, joy and healing interest you even just a bit, you’ll want to curl up for a couple of hours with The Believer’s Edge—a charming and moving story about finding the path to a healthier, happier and more satisfying life.
